THE DAMP
Airtightness and Permeability in Building Materials

THE DAMP Airtightness and Permeability in Building Materials

Dampness in buildings is bad for the occupant, the building’s structure, thermal performance and appearance. These are all controlled by the airtightness and vapour permeability of the fabric, materials and construction. They can now be measured with the dual Versaperm Vapour Permeability and Airtightness meter. Between them they allow the architect / builder to control energy flow, regulate dampness and optimise the environment within a building to provide a healthy environment for the people who work or live inside.

Permeability and airtightness are managed by different legislative regulations and guidelines, however Versaperm uses similarities in the underlying physics to measure each of them.  This significantly reduces costs, especially when compared to conventional testing.

Results from the new dual system are accurate in the parts per million range and it can optionally measure vapour permeability not just for air and water vapour but also for CO2, hydrocarbons, oxygen and virtually any other legal gas or vapour.

As well as supplying the new system Versaperm also offers a consultancy and a laboratory-based testing service to measure these properties.

The system can optionally provide measurements across a wide range of climatic, environmental, temperature and humidity conditions.  It can even simulate diurnal and seasonal cycles.  It also has the ability to cycle through various climate and warming scenarios as required.

Understanding the ways materials respond leads not just to regulatory compliance but it potentially reduces heating and cooling costs as well as effectively eliminating mould growth or rot.
